Description:
This studio course provides a creative workspace to include yourself and your lived experiences in the canon of world history. Consider that we as human beings have more in common than not. “To be or not to be a Beings that is the human question” Shakespeare. Who are you? Who are your people? What is an ancestor, and how do they live in my current life? This course exposes students to an expanded view of art practices and potentialities in various communities and settings, including but not restricted to those that are not "mainstream." Implicit in the structure of this course is the attempt to experience life beyond the campus and the relevance of art in differing contexts, especially mixed media creations The primary focus of this studio class is communicating knowledge over critiquing created form. Most works will be created and discussed during class.Visiting a wide range of institutions, venues, and communities and interactions that intersect race and class boundaries will be considered, especially distinguishing the ethnic communities in question. Our art applications will utilize various methods and materials, e.g., murals, graffiti, quilting, video, standard painting in acrylic, and more. The students' definition of their communities will also determine the subject of their investigation.
