Description:

The Art World is often compared to the Wild West, a frontier with dynamic shifts of scale, opportunity, and financial conditions. Artists have a range of options in how to conduct their practice "In Real Life." The economics of the art world directly challenge artists to define positions and carve pathways in relation to them. From tackling issues of gallery representation, managing collaborative projects; negotiating grants for large and small projects and communicating effectively with curators and institutions. This team-taught class offers students a rich variety of models for engaging in a professional and pro-active arts practice. By investigating the practice of teaching, art and entrepreneurship, career sustainability, and artist-generated D.I.Y. and collectives, this class aims to provide a rigorous and frank discussion of the behind-the-scenes highlights and pitfalls of the current art world. At stake is the idea that artists can steer their energies towards making the system work for them as much as they must learn how to deftly navigate within it.
