Description:
Guided by writers who know the islands well, we'll read and discuss the poetry and stories of the Pacific Ocean regions. What do writers have to say to us about their cities and shores--and about our planet in common? We'll give attention to the way traditional stories, beliefs, and practices exist alongside contemporary situations like biodiversity, climate change, population migration, and environmental justice. We'll consider the legacy of weapons testing; the effect of rising sea levels on people's ways of living and cultural traditions; coral reef health; and the behavior of sea birds and shore birds. Through a combination of Zoom meetings and asynchronous activities, we’ll become better acquainted with the literature and orature of the Pacific and offer our own ocean stories and experience, honing our writing and thinking skills all the while.LITPA 2000 courses introduce students to the study of literature or the performing arts, emphasizing analysis of both particular works and of the range of genres, periods and traditions. Frequent reading and writing assignments will be made.
