Description:
Literary journalism, it has been said, is the literature of the everyday. The best practitioners bring their curiosity and ingenuity, and then drill down into the bedrock of ordinary existence, exploring what Gay Talese calls "the fictional current that flows beneath the stream of reality." You will learn interviewing and reporting techniques while also mastering the craft of writing fluid and compelling prose. We will read both long and short form non-fiction by such writers as Susan Orleans, Ted Conover, Truman Capote, Hanif Abdurraqib, and Jia Tolentino. We will also read interviews with writers about how they report and write their pieces. Former students in this class have gone on to work as journalists for The Atlantic Magazine, The New York Times, and other publications.LITPA 200 courses introduce students to the study of literature or the performing arts, emphasizing analysis of both particular works and of the range of genres, periods and traditions. Frequent reading and writing assignments will be made.
