Description:
M.Arch Studio 1 is the first course in the graduate Architecture studio sequence. It is composed of two components, each of which introduces distinct architectural skills and approaches. The first component, 1A, addresses Form and Space. The studio is concerned with architecture as a practice that organizes space through formal composition and arrangement. Students develop skills and a critical understanding of historical and contemporary techniques of formal and spatial organization. The studio also explores techniques of architectural representation, and the links between varied modes of representation and their political, cultural, and social reverberations.
The second component, 1B, addresses Scenarios. The studio examines the relationship between architectural form, program, inhabitation, and social conditions. The studio considers how architecture shapes relationships between people as well as their daily actions and activities. The studio explores how disciplinary tools can be leveraged towards specific social intentions.
