Description:
Can you recognize yourself in the mirror? Do you usually know what other people are thinking? Have you ever heard an inner voice telling you what to do? Are there times when the world seems crazy? This course explores contemporary theories of consciousness and connection, sanity and mental illness. Beginning with an introduction to the study of consciousness in non-human animals, we'll get a basic foundation in the stages of human emotional and social development and then explore the many variations in adult perceptions of the self, other people, and the world. Topics include trauma and cognition; psychosis, psychedelic therapies, and religious experience; the gender of suffering, especially in relation to borderline personality, anxiety, and depression; and social justice and mental health. Please note that this course is not a therapy group and does not offer medical advice or clinical treatment.Philosophy and Critical Theory (PHCRT) courses focus on developing critical reading and thinking skills, with an emphasis on learning to frame and explore meaningful questions. Students consider multiple perspectives and claims in the process of formulating independent, well-founded opinions.
