Description:

This studio-based workshop is open to all Fine Arts students working in any medium and serves as a catalyst for artistic production through the expansive lens of painting. The course is structured around three core components: Studio Momentum, the Critique Group, and Professional Practice.Studio Momentum and the Critique Group foster an intensive and focused environment, encouraging students to deepen their creative development within the context of their individual studio practice. Through peer presentations and mediated discussions, students gain critical feedback to: a) assess how their work communicates, b) refine the relationship between material and context, and c) develop essential skills for presenting their work to broader audiences.Professional Practice introduces key aspects of sustaining a long-term studio practice, including strategies for navigating the art world beyond graduation. Discussions and presentations will explore contemporary art issues through the framework of painting and interdisciplinary practices, addressing both material and conceptual concerns. Additionally, the course examines practical approaches to building a sustainable art practice, equipping students with tools to evolve their profession over time. For students who are highly motivated and dedicated to their work, upper-level Painting/Drawing Workshops continue to advance ideas from earlier workshops with a deeper emphasis on the development a personal voice through individual projects and critical thinking, both in and out of the studio. Interdisciplinarity, experimentation and collaboration are encouraged. Lectures, readings, presentations, and guest critiques provide additional context for this research.
